Living with Integrity When No One’s Watching: A Soul Care Character Test

A business owner shared a successful strategy he uses to screen possible job candidates.

He asks the applicant where they work and what day they are busiest. Provided the candidate’s job is at a public venue, he shows up during their peak business time, finds an inconspicuous place and nonchalantly observes their interactive responsiveness.

“These on-the-job observations beat any other character tests I’ve used. I’m able to gauge someone’s integrity within a few minutes of watching them during crunch times. Seeing someone in action when they’re pressed teaches me more about someone than what I learn at an interview or business luncheon,” the manager said.

Spiritually, I believe we all have a Character Witness. Each day, I strive to practice kindness, trustworthiness, and optimism. I try to listen closely to others so I can understand where their true heart may be.

Hopefully when people observe me for any length of time, no matter how busy I am, I want them to see reliability and patience. I’ve learned that repeated behavior, both positive and negative, produces muscle memory. I want my muscles to remember to lunge for the strength of all.

When I consider each minute as a character screening, I am more aware of how my Spiritual Guide would respond. Will God give me a positive review for what I think or say?
